Steve Laven plays cello in the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and appears regularly with the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra. He is also on the faculties of the Boston Youth Symphony and the Rivers School Conservatory. He is joined by his son Andrew, who is the Assistant Principal Cello of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. In this video, they play an original composition by Steven entitled Prelude for Emily.


Margaret Phillips plays contra bassoon in the Rhode Island Philharmonic, is an active freelancer in the Boston area, and is on the faculties of Boston University and Berklee. Tony D’Amico has been a bass player in the Rhode Island Philharmonic for 26 years. He enjoys a diverse freelance career throughout the New England area that includes performances with prominent symphonic and operatic organizations in the region, as well as with national touring musical theatre productions. In this video, Margaret and Tony play Telemann’s Canonic Sonata No.1.


Katrina Smith plays viola in the Rhode Island Philharmonic and is also Principal Violist of the Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra and Co-Principal Violist of the Dallas Opera Orchestra. In this video, Katrina plays Bach’s Prelude to Suite No.44.

Alexei Doohovskoy plays trombone in the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Orchestra of Indian Hill. He currently serves on the faculties of Brown University, Rhode Island College, and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. In this video, Alexei plays the theme from Super Mario Brothers.


Alexey Shabalin has been a violinist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic for 22 years. He studied violin and conducting at the Moscow conservatory and is the Music Director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestras. In this video, Alexey plays Pablo de Sarasate’s Romanza Andaluza.


Mina Lavcheva has been a violinist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic for 12 years. Originally from Bulgaria, she is currently based in Boston and plays with numerous ensembles and orchestras in New England. In this video, Mina plays Ignaz Pleyel’s Theme and Variations from Grand Duet No.2 for Violin and Viola.


Gabriel Langfur Rice plays bass trombone in the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Vermont Symphony Orchestras and the Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. Gabriel also serves on the faculties of Boston University and the Kinhaven Music School. In this video, he plays My Funny Valentine by Rodgers and Hart, along with a piece inspired by it.


Hyunjung Choi is Principal Harpist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, as well as the orchestra librarian. She teaches privately and is also a teaching associate in the Music Department at Brown University. In this video, Hyunjung plays Carlos Salzedo’s Chanson dans la Nuit.


Craig McNutt is Principal Timpanist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. He also serves as timpanist with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and is on the music faculty at Wellesley College. In this video, Craig plays William Kraft’s Homage (to Gustav Mahler) from Images for Solo Timpani.


Kevin Owen is Principal Horn of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Boston Philharmonic and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. He also arranges music for RIPO’s Link Up Concert Series. In this video, Kevin plays his original composition entitled Berserk Unit.


Trombonist Greg Spiridopoulos is Principal Trombone of the RI Philharmonic, Albany Symphony Orchestra, Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra, Second Trombone of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the Empire Brass Quintet. He is also Associate Professor of Trombone at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In this video, Greg plays Thom Ritter George’s Aria and Dance.


Susan Thomas has been Principal Flute with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra for more than 20 years. She is also a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Rhode Island, where she teaches flute, chamber music and pedagogy. She is accompanied by Nasser Ashraf on the piano, who studied at the State University of New York at Purchase and is currently Organist and Choir Director at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. In this video, Susan plays Gluck’s Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits.
