Youth Orchestras’ Concert a Rousing Success!

We would like to congratulate three of our youth orchestras. They played a terrific concert on January 22. We’d like to thank Ms. Irina Naryshkova (String Orchestra), Mr. Vince Mattera (Repertory Orchestra), and Mr. Alexey Shabalin (Symphony Orchestra) for their hard work and preparation for these performances. Some openings are still available in our youth orchestras for the remainder of the 2016-17 season!

Youth Orchestra to Perform at Viennese Masters Orchestra Invitational in New York, NY

ripyo-spring2017-carnegiehallinvitation4In a national celebration of music, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra has been invited to perform in the 2017 Viennese Masters Orchestra Invitational in New York City. The festival will take place at the world renowned Carnegie Hall on Friday, June 23, 2017.

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra is featured among four accomplished symphony orchestras selected to perform in this historic, world class concert venue. The 2017 Viennese Masters Orchestra Invitational is produced by concert tour management company Music Celebrations International in partnership with Carnegie Hall.

RI Philharmonic Presents Beethoven’s “Eroica” on February 18 Robert Levin & Ya-Fei Chuang in Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Larry Rachleff welcome acclaimed pianist Robert Levin for a return engagement at The VETS. Levin is joined by his wife, renowned pianist Ya-Fei Chuang, and the Orchestra for Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. The concert is Saturday, February 18 at 8:00pm and also features Beethoven’s Eroica – the Third Symphony – and Messiaen’s Forgotten Offerings. The Friday AMICA Rush Hour (Feb 17 at 6:30pm) concert features Beethoven’s Eroica and the Philharmonic’s annual side-by-side performance with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra – performing the final movements of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite.

About Robert Levin

Pianist and conductor Robert Levin’s engagements include the orchestras of Atlanta, Berlin, Birmingham, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Montreal, Utah and Vienna. Renowned for his improvised embellishments and cadenzas in Classical period repertoire, Robert Levin is a passionate advocate of new music, having commissioned and premiered a large number of works. A renowned chamber musician and a noted theorist and musicologist, his completions of Mozart fragments are published, recorded and performed throughout the world.

About Ya-Fei Chuang

Acclaimed by critics internationally for performances of stunning virtuosity, refinement and communicative power, Ya-Fei Chuang has appeared at numerous international festivals, as well as the Celebrity Series and Symphony Hall in Boston, the philharmonic halls of Berlin and Cologne, the Berlin Schauspielhaus and Philharmonie, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the National Concert Hall in Taipei, the Orchestra of the Teatro Argentino in La Plata, Argentina and many others.  She has given the world premieres of works by John Harbison, Stanley Walden, Thomas Oboe Lee and Pulitzer prizewinner Yehudi Wyner. Les offrandes oubliées (Forgotten Offerings)
Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)

Outside the box:  Messiaen defies classification. One of France’s most important and influential composers of the 20th century, his style employed medieval modes, serial procedure, Indian ragas and bird songs.

First big break: Les offrandes oubliées, Messiaen’s first major work performed publicly and published, revealed his great creative potential and showed his penchant for expressing religious emotion in music. In the published score, the composer offered this guide to the music’s meaning: “Thou lovest us, Gentle Jesus, but we had forgotten.”

Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor
Francis Poulenc (1899-1963)

Eclectic finesse:  The 1932 concerto typifies Poulenc’s eclecticism. With themes ranging in style from jazz to Rachmaninoff, the mosaic-like form jumps from one to another with finesse: we can hear flavors of Stravinsky, “music hall,” Russian, even Balinese Gamelan music that Poulenc had heard in 1931. About the second movement, Poulenc wrote, “I allowed myself to return to Mozart, for I cherish the melodic line and I prefer Mozart to all other musicians.”

Symphony No.3 in E-flat major, op.55 (Eroica)
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Not for Napoleon:  In 1804, Beethoven had just finished a new symphony. Musically revolutionary, it was longer than any the world had known. It was to be the “Bonaparte” Symphony, dedicated to Napoleon and, implicitly, to the spirit of the French Revolution. But when Napoleon proclaimed himself the French Emperor, Beethoven condemned his hero’s treachery. According to his student, Beethoven threw out the dedication, crying, “Is he then, too, nothing more than an ordinary human being? Now he will trample on all the rights of man and indulge only his ambition. He will exalt himself above all others and become a tyrant!” The work’s new title page read Sinfonia eroica, “composed to celebrate the memory of a great man.”

What to listen for:  Following two sharp chords, we are swept up in the rhythmic momentum. The music is alternately heroic, turbulent and tragically tender. Next, the funeral march movement explores heroic grieving and spiritual contemplation through variations and fugue in one of his profoundest musical essays. The third movement, a jovial Scherzo, lifts the listeners from these depths with its buoyant rhythms and raucous outbursts. In the central passage, Beethoven employs three horns in passages both memorable and heroic. The finale begins with variations on a theme, followed by an andante section that explores the tragic and noble possibilities of the lyrical theme, interrupted by the final, triumphal finish.

2016-2017 is the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra’s 72nd season and Music Director Larry Rachleff’s 21st with the Orchestra. The season’s eight-concert Saturday TACO Classical Series features world-renowned guest artists. The four-concert Friday AMICA Rush Hour Series offers an earlier start time and shorter program with full performances of select repertoire from Saturday. On March 5, the Orchestra is joined by the stunning pianist Lang Lang for a Gala Celebration.

Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School Chamber and Jazz 2017 Recitals

YOUTH CHAMBER ENSEMBLES

            The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Chamber Groups (RIPYChamber) presents its first recital of the season on Saturday, January 28 at 5:30pm at RI Philharmonic’s Carter Center for Music Education & Performance in East Providence. This performance is free and open to the public.

Chamber Music classes provide a format for intensive study and performance of standard chamber music repertoire for string quartets, woodwind and brass quintets, piano trios and quartets and mixed ensembles. Students should have a minimum of three years playing experience. Ensembles receive weekly one-hour coaching sessions, perform in recitals and participate in master classes with RI Philharmonic Music Director Larry Rachleff. Rehearsals generally begin in October and run through May.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29 at 1:00pm
YOUTH JAZZ AND ROCK ENSEMBLES

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Jazz and rock Groups (RIPYJazz) presents its first recital of the season on Sunday, January 29 at 1:00pm at RI Philharmonic’s Carter Center for Music Education & Performance in East Providence. This performance is free and open to the public.

The Jazz and Rock Department offers a complete educational program for students inter­ested in jazz or rock study and performance. Courses are organized so that each student is placed according to its interests and skills and can progress accordingly. The RIPYJazz Big Band, under the direction of Wendy Klein, performs at numerous community events including Monday Night Jazz at Bovi’s, Vernal Arts and Music Festival, and the Blackstone Boulevard Summer Concert Series.

All RIPYJazz ensembles rehearse at the RI Philharmonic’s Carter Center for Music Education & Performance in East Providence once a week from September through May and present various performances throughout season.

            The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (RIPYO) presents its second concert of the season on Sunday, January 22 at 3:00pm at The VETS in Providence. The concert features the top-level Symphony Orchestra conducted by Music Director Alexey Shabalin, Repertory Orchestra under the direction of Vincent Mattera, and String Orchestra under the direction of Irina Naryshkova. The Symphony Orchestra will feature guest conductor, Larry Rachleff, in its performance of the second movement of Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony.”  Maestro Rachleff appears as a special guest in this concert as he completes his final season with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. Rachleff will conduct the Symphony Orchestra once more in its February Side-by-Side performance of Stravinsky’s Finale to the “Firebird Suite” with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra.

Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony and Alban Gerhardt’s Return on January 21

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Larry Rachleff welcome cellist Alban Gerhardt back to The VETS for a program of Haydn’s Second Cello Concerto along with Schubert’s immortal “Unfinished” Eighth Symphony and two favorites by Richard Strauss: “Dance of the Seven Veils” from Salome and Der Rosenkavalier: Suite.

Challenging expectations

Gerhardt is passionate about sharing his discoveries with audiences far beyond the concert hall. Projects have involved performances and workshops in schools and hospitals and pioneering sessions in public spaces and young offender institutions. His live performances on Germany’s main commuter routes vividly demonstrate his commitment to challenging classical music expectations.

Following early competition success, Gerhardt’s international career was launched by his debut with Berliner Philharmoniker in 1991. Orchestra collaborations since include Royal Concertgebouw, London Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, the Cleveland, the Philadelphia and Chicago symphony orchestras, and in almost every case he commits to memorizing their scores before world premiere performances. He plays a Matteo Gofriller cello dating from 1710.

About the concert: stories behind the music

“Dance of the Seven Veils” from Salome
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)

Scandal:  Oscar Wilde’s play portrayed the Bible story in which the temptress, Salome, tries to seduce the holy man, John the Baptist. When he rejects her, she has his head brought to her on a silver shield. After the King agrees to grant any wish she likes, Salome agrees to dance for him, casting aside one veil after another. Strauss saw the play in Berlin in early 1903. It took Strauss two years to complete the one-act operatic score.

Cello Concerto No.2 in D major (H. VIIB.2)
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Publicity stunt? Haydn, or not? For over a century that was the raging issue about the D major Cello Concerto. During the early 20th century, the controversy helped to make this concerto one of Haydn’s most popular works. The virtuosic solo part also made the Haydn attribution suspect, as it went beyond the norms of 18th-century classic concertos. Finally, in 1953 the autographed manuscript came to light in Vienna, establishing the date of composition as 1783 and confirming that the famous work was indeed by Haydn.

Hear this: Particularly charming is the duet between cello solo and violins in the second theme. Later the cello plays all the themes with elaborate embellishments. Some high notes imitate the sound of a flute.

Symphony No.8 in B minor (“Unfinished”)
Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Why is it unfinished?  The misconception that Schubert died before he had the opportunity to complete it simply does not square with the facts, since he finished the two movements six years before his death. He left several instrumental works unfinished. This same year, 1822, Schubert’s serious, and ultimately fatal, illness was diagnosed as syphilis. Confusion and emotional distress surely influenced his creative affairs at the time.

Hear this: The two completed movements are tight-knit and emotionally taut. A dark opening idea in the low strings leads quickly to the song-like wistful first theme in the woodwinds. The second theme — one of Schubert’s most memorable — is introduced in a bright key. The serenity of the second movement’s opening theme provides a release from the tension and melancholy of the first movement. Soon, however, the wistful lament of the clarinet’s theme tinges the movement with sadness.

Der Rosenkavalier: Suite
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)

New territory: The Earl of Harewood described Der Rosenkavalier as “a masterpiece of pastiche, an evocation of an unrealistic, fairy-story Vienna of long ago, a brilliant tour-de-force.” For Strauss, the stylistic approach was different from anything he had tried in his orchestral or operatic works up to that time: a sort of amalgamation of Mozart and Wagner.

Agnes Little Elementary School Hosts First “Playing Party”

“Victoria’s Dream Project is a new pilot program in its first year servicing third and fourth grade students at Agnes Little Elementary School in Pawtucket, RI. With the generous support of the Alviti Foundation, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School provides three days of violin and viola lessons each week to 34 students. Taught by musicians and faculty from both the Orchestra and the Music School, students have worked their way from “box” violins and “dowel” bows to the real deal. After just one month of learning best practice and posture and muscular control, our students can now play three songs!

The goal of Victoria’s Dream Project is to effect real change in the cultural landscape of this community. We are also working towards creating diversity in the RI Philharmonic Youth Ensembles by developing a comprehensive instrumental feeder program in a diverse community as well as providing a pathway for these students to be accepted at the JMW Arts High School in Pawtucket.

This project reflects the dreams of Victoria Alviti, a vibrant, larger-than-life twenty-two-year-old who had a vision to create a foundation committed to keeping music programs in schools. Before she passed away she shared this dream with her family and friends. By following in Victoria’s footsteps, we hope to facilitate academic achievement and develop creative capacities for lifelong success through a quality music education for these students.”

Celebrate with Handel’s Messiah!

Christine Noel conducts 10th annual collaboration with Providence Singers

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes the Providence Singers to the stage for their tenth joint performance of Handel’s Messiah. Providence Singers Artistic Director Christine Noel takes the podium as guest conductor for this perennial favorite holiday concert. The performance features a family-friendly start time of 7:00pm on Saturday, December 10 at The VETS in Providence.  Soloists include soprano Margot Rood, mezzo-soprano Christina English, tenor Marcio de Oliveira and bass Nicholas Laroche.

“This oratorio gave Handel international fame,” said Larry Rachleff, Music Director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, “even though the first performance was considered a failure! It wasn’t until Handel conducted it himself five or six years later, as a charity benefit, that Messiah began to be believed. Its story and Handel’s music combined to give the audience and the world something so unique that it has lasted even to today as one of the great works of western civilization.”

About the music

Two hundred and seventy-two years after its first performance, Handel’s Messiah remains the most frequently performed, most beloved work in the choral canon, featuring the “Hallelujah” chorus, “For Unto Us a Child Is Born,” “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” and other favorites. Handel completed the entire composition in only 24 days, and the oratorio has been performed consistently – revised, updated, staged, and restored to its “period” form – ever since.

Somewhere in the world on any given day, an audience is hearing Georg Frideric Handel’s Messiah, perhaps the most universally loved composition for chorus and orchestra ever written. Handel had built his previous oratorios around strong characters and strong stories — Solomon, Samson, Saul, Julius Caesar. In Messiah, the chorus and soloists serve as storytellers, providing narrative and commentary that propel the drama forward. Handel wrote, “When I composed the ‘Hallelujah Chorus,’ I did think I did see all Heaven before me and the great God Himself.”

The première — April 13, 1742, in Dublin’s New Music Hall — was presented to a packed house. Gentlemen were asked not to wear swords, and women were encouraged to wear fashions without hoops, so that the hall could accommodate more people. The London première established a tradition that continues to this day, described by one observer: “When the chorus struck up ‘for the Lord God Omnipotent’ [in the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’], they were so transported that they all together, with the King, started up and remained standing till the chorus ended.”

Providence Singers celebrates the choral art through concerts of masterworks and contemporary works, creative collaborations, recordings of American choral treasures, new music commissions and education programs. Christine Noel, Artistic Director of the Providence Singers
Christine Noel recently conducted the RI Philharmonic and the Singers in Mozart’s Requiem, and the Singers in Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Bach’s Cantata 140. She prepared the Singers for performances of Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Holst’s The Planets, Carmina burana, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the RI Philharmonic. Christine is Founder and Artistic Director of the RI Children’s Chorus, an award-winning choral organization for youth which serves children age 7 to 18 in six performance ensembles. She holds a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from Boston University, and studied at the Università degli Studi di Firenze and the Kodály Institute of Music in Kecskemét, Hungary.

Margot Rood, soprano
Margot Rood, hailed for her “luminosity and grace” by The New York Times, performs a wide range of repertoire across American stages. Following her solo debut at Boston Symphony Hall in 2011, she has become a frequent soloist with Handel and Haydn Society. Recent and upcoming solo appearances include Stravinsky’s Threni with the Cleveland Orchestra, Benjamin’s Dream of the Song with the Boston Symphony, Reich’s Desert Music with the New World Symphony, Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria and the Bach Mass in B Minor with Handel and Haydn Society, Messiah, Vivaldi Gloria, Mozart Requiem with Seraphic Fire, Messiah with the Bach Collegium San Diego, Brahms’ Requiem with Oratorio Chorale and the Kent Singers, Bach’s St. John Passion and Mozart’s C Minor Mass with the Tucson Chamber Artists, Bach’s St. John Passion with Back Bay Chorale and various concerts with Blue Heron.

Christina English, mezzo-soprano
Known for her agile voice and striking presence, Christina English brings dramatic commitment and musical sensitivity to a versatile array of opera, concert and musical theater performances throughout the northeast. Her upcoming season includes performances at Boston Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Museum of Art with Lorelei Ensemble, Cutler Majestic Theater with Beth Morrison Projects, Jordan Hall with Boston Baroque and The Lily Pad in Cambridge with Boston Art Song Society. She has appeared with Lorelei Ensemble, Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn Society Outreach Vocal Quartet and Longfellow Chorus (E.E. Rice’s Evangeline); St. Petersburg Opera, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Odyssey Opera, Guerilla Opera, Boston Midsummer Opera and Lyric Stage Company of Boston.

Marcio de Oliveira, tenor
Marcio de Oliveira recently made his international debut as the Evangelist and tenor soloist in Bach’s St. John Passion with Ensemble Regale and the University of King’s College Chapel Choir, broadcast on CBC Radio 2. His recital and concert work includes Britten’s Five Canticles and Poulenc’s Calligrammes with the Westminster Choir College, Handel’s Jephtha, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat and St. Matthew and St. John Passions with Handel and Haydn Society, Haydn’s Theresienmesse, the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion with Fuma Sacra, Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Messiah, Bach’s Mass in G Minor, Mozart’s Requiem and Rachmaninov’s Vespers. Operatic roles include Erisbe in Cavalli’s Artemisia and Joadab in Charpentier’s David et Jonathas with Helios Early Opera, Aladino in Scarlatti’s La principessa fedele with Amherst Early Music Festival, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with CSUS Opera Theater.

Nicholas Laroche, bass
Nicholas Laroche’s performance highlights include the Bach B Minor Mass, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Mozart’s Requiem, the roles of Raphael in Haydn’s Die Shöpfung, Elijah in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Orfeo in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Sid in Britten’s Albert Herring, Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Tarquinias in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, Rambaldo in Puccini’s La Rondine and The Jailor in Poulenc’s Les Dialogues des Carmélites, most recently with Opera McGill. Mr. Laroche’s solo performances include select works by Vaughan Williams, Finzi, Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, Schubert and Britten. Mr. Laroche is a frequent soloist and choir member with the Rhode Island based Ecclesia Consort under the direction of Pierre Masse.
