Online Audition Information for Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (RIPYO)

  • Monday August 24 from 4-8pm
  • Wednesday August 26 from 4-8pm

Due to social distancing guidelines, our youth ensembles auditions for the 2020-2021 season will take place online using the Zoom platform. If you are interested in auditioning, but are not able to use Zoom, please contact Christine Eldridge at celdridge@riphil.org or 401-248-7012.


RIPYO Audition Requirements


Beginning String Ensemble

A fun, introductory ensemble for string players with 1-2 years of study.

Students considered for this ensemble can hold their instruments and bows properly, read notes on A and D strings, and can recognize and play whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes. Students are learning to make visual contact with and follow the conductor while playing. Students in this ensemble will play canons and rounds as well as beginning string ensemble music in 5 parts.

Techniques and Skills Required for this Ensemble
  • Student can identify and play quarter and eighth notes
  • Student displays proper holding of instruments
  • Student can identify and play two note slurs
  • Student can identify and play dynamics (forte and piano)

Intermediate String Ensemble

An ensemble for students with 2-4 years of study.

Students considered for this ensemble will be comfortable using all parts of their bow, will be able to recognize and read notes on all 4 strings with a variety of rhythms, and have had some experience playing parts independently within an ensemble. Students typically are ready for or have begun to shift in their private lessons, as the repertoire often includes extensions and/or shifts in the cello and 1st violin parts. Students are proficient at making visual contact with and following the conductor while playing.

Techniques and Skills Required for This Ensemble:
  • Student can identify and play sixteenth notes
  • Student can identify and play dotted rhythms
  • Student requires minimal reminders about playing position
  • Student can slur 2,3,4 notes
  • Emphasis on proper holding of instruments
  • Student can play marcato and legato
  • Student has extended knowledge of dynamics
  • Student has low 1’s and high 3’s

String Orchestra

An ensemble for students with 4-6 years of study.

This ensemble performs a wide range of a string repertoire. Students develop their ensemble skills: becoming more aware of their section players, understanding how sections of an orchestra are connected to each other, creating visual contact with conductor, ability to follow conductor, ability to match bow strokes, follow section leader, etc. Students work on keeping balance and dynamic contrasts.

  • Student is aware of half position

Repertory Orchestra

This is our entry level full concert orchestra.

For some students, this is their first experience with a symphonic orchestra which includes woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. This ensemble performs original and arrangements of greater orchestral standards. Rehearsals consist of work across all sections. Ensemble work requires students to practice independently and in a group setting. Musicians learn the basic skills of performing with all orchestral instruments.

  • Student can shift fluently up to fifth position (string players)
  • Student can demonstrate and identify different styles of music
  • Student plays with expression
  • Student performs contrasting dynamics
  • Students perform with quality, centered tone
  • Student can perform range of articulations

Symphony Orchestra

This is our most advanced orchestra.

Ensemble is comprised of skillful young musicians. This ensemble performs original orchestral standards. Musicians are interested in growing ensemble and musical experience. Orchestra members are expected to have instrumental fluency and musicianship which provides them the ability to recognize and perform in different styles.
